Let’s Colour brought a fresh new look to Padang, Indonesia, by renewing the local heritage buildings in Padang Old Town and by adding colors to the iconic Siti Nurbaya Bridge. But besides reviving the appearance of the city, this colorful transformation means much more to the people and local community.

New life for the historical center and bridge

Padang, once a historic trading center, is now a popular entry point for surfers traveling to the Batu and Mentawai Islands and for tourists visiting the West Sumatran highlands. The main attractions of the city are the Old Town, with many heritage buildings, and the popular sightseeing spot, Siti Nurbaya Bridge.

Let’s Colour partnered with the Padang City Council to conduct their major renovation program, which aims to breathe new life into the city. As part of the plan to preserve the cultural heritage and restore Padang Old Town, more than twenty-five historical buildings have been renovated, preserving the original architecture and its distinctive white color.

In addition, the 156-meter long Siti Nurbaya Bridge was painted in local Marawa colors, part of the traditional identity of Minangkabau. According to this traditional West Sumatran culture, every color has its own meaning. Red symbolizes courage and mutual respect, yellow majesty and rule, while black stands for strength, mercy, and wisdom.

Helping painters become masters of their craft

Prior to the Let’s Colour project, Dulux organized a painting training for local painters. Approximately forty people participated in the Dulux Painter Academy, reflecting Dulux’s commitment to helping painter progress their skills to become masters of their trade. The painters put their acquired knowledge into practice by participating in this extensive project, using 5,100 liters of Dulux Weathershield Flash, a premium quality paint that provides all-weather protection.

After months of work, a colorful and festive ceremony was organized to celebrate the new look of Padang Old Town and Siti Nurbaya Bridge. The well-attended event took place on National Heroes Day and reflected the cultural values such as tolerance and togetherness that have been passed down through generations in Padang. That is why the cultural art performances at the event also included traditional dances and even a lion dance.

Impact beyond numbers

As a result of this Let’s Colour project, Padang has regained its beauty. But this project went beyond just a makeover. It shows the transformative power of paint, which can inspire people and uplift communities.

By beautifying Padang Old Town and Siti Nurbaya Bridge, this initiative contributes to the promotion of Padang as a tourist destination. In the long run, this means boosting its economy by attracting even more visitors and creating new opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Moreover, the renovation creates new perspectives for the entire local community. By brightening up their environment, it will bring happiness and a fresh outlook to all residents of Padang, and by preserving their local heritage, it will strengthen their sense of pride and unity.

In short – this transformation will help to provide a better future for the 1.9 million people of Padang.
