Thailand, SisaketLet’s Colour brought artists and volunteers together to create colorful artworks as a part of the Sound of Sisaket project. This initiative aims to express the distinctive culture and identity of Sisaket, Thailand, and help boost the economy of the entire region.
Exhibition of diversity
Sisaket is a north-eastern Thai province with a unique ethnic diversity and rich heritage. Through the Sound of Sisaket project, local communities exhibit this variety of ethnicities by using street art, which depicts distinct traditional identity symbols, such as the historical landmarks Prasat Prang Ku and Prasat Sa Kamphaeng Yai, Lamduan flowers, Kupri, shallots, garlic, and Volcano durian. This way, the project connects people from different cultures, like Khmer, Suay (Kui), Lao, and Yer, and helps them brighten up their environment.
For this initiative, Let’s Colour partnered with Thailand’s Creative Economy Agency (CEA) and brought together a group of more than twenty artists from the area (collectively called ‘Neighborhood’) with local participants made up of government agencies, residents, local paint dealers, and AkzoNobel volunteers. Together, they helped to transform Sisaket by using 2,000 liters of Dulux premium quality paint and creating eye-catching works of art in four areas around the city: the community fresh market, Santisuk Hotel, the walls of old commercial buildings, such as the railway station, and the Satri Sisaket school.
Supporting the local community
In addition to beautifying the city, this project is part of the government’s efforts to develop the Mae Si Circle in the city center into a culturally creative district and contribute to the sustainable economic growth of the area.
Mr. Chutayaves Sinthuphan, Director of the Creative Economy Promotion Agency, said, “Sisaket is a city with a distinctive identity and culture due to its variety of ethnicities, their stories, and their way of life. The Sound of Sisaket project was organized to connect people and bring those from diverse backgrounds together to develop their neighborhoods and improve the environment of the city, thus making a positive impact on society and culture. In turn, this can help create jobs and boost the local economy. It is an important step in the development of the area and part of a long-term provincial development plan to make Sisaket a creative city and link it with other creative city networks.”
