On Saturday 7th May, the Let’s Colour project successfully completed its first project in Chalvey, Slough. A local shopping precinct was transformed from a drab grey environment to a shopping precinct full of vibrant colour with rows of brightly coloured painted shop shutters.

The month long project was enthusiastically supported by the local community with an impressive number of both adults and children all volunteering their spare time to help paint their local shops. The external painting of the shop shutters not only made an improvement in brightening up this local community space but also helped to bring members of the community together. The official launch was a fun filled day with face painting, games and activities for the children and opportunities to be photographed with the Dulux Dog, topped off with the cutting of a celebration cake.

The longer term social legacy of this project has been amazing. Following this project the community has come together with the local police force, who are now investigating installing CCTV in the area, and in addition to this new businesses have moved into the shopping precinct. The experience of volunteering in this event has also benefited individuals, one of whom was a resident at Slough YMCA and has since gone on to start up his own graphic design business, and another who has used the experience to help gain a painting and decorating apprenticeship.
